Boat Registration Information
VESSELS THAT REQUIRE REGISTRATION
1.All powerboats using gas.
2.All powerboats using electricity and being sailed on public waters.
VESSELS THAT DO NOT REQUIRE REGISTRATION
1.Any boat that is propelled only by oars or paddles.
2.All powerboats using electricity but sailed on private waters.
3.Boats registered in another state and not being used in Kentucky for more
than 60 days.
4.Boats registered with the U.S. Coast Guard.
TO REGISTER IN PERSON
•You can register a boat in person by visiting your local County Clerk's office.
•You must bring a completed
boat registration application and proof of ownership such
as a bill of sale, invoice, bill of lading, certificate of origin, or out-of-state title.
TO REGISTER BY U.S. MAIL
The boat registration application and proof of ownership and insurance can also be mailed to
the local
County Clerk's office. NOTE, expired registrations cannot be renewed by mail.

What you will need:
Kentucky law requires a person who is purchasing a boat or bringing a boat into Kentucky
from another state to make application for title within 15 days.
1.Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin properly assigned by the selling dealer

Boat Purchased Out of State
What you will need:
1.Original Out-of-State Title (If a title is not issued by that state, provide the Certificate of
Registration accompanied by a bill of sale) properly assigned by the seller and notarized, if

A 6% Kentucky use tax is collected on the sale price. Credit is given for sales or use tax paid to a
dealer. Proof is required. (Occassional sales between individuals may be exempt from use tax.)
Titling and Registering Your Out of State Boat
What you will need:

1.Original Out-of-State Title or Certificate of Registration if a title is not issued by that state

2.Application for Title/Registration

3.Out-of-State Purchase - Use Tax Affidavit (51A280)

4.Picture identification

5.Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for each new owner(s) or
Federal Tax ID Number for companies
Buying or Selling a Kentucky titled boat
What you will need:

1.The original Kentucky Title or Certificate of Registration if no title was issued

2.Application for Title/Registration
(TC96-184) (See Example)

3.Picture identification for buyer and seller (If buyer and/or seller will not be present in our office, the
application must be signed and notarized prior to transfer.)

4.Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for each new owner(s) or
Federal ID Tax Number for companies

5.Title Lien Statement
(TC96-187E) if applicable

Renewal of a Kentucky Boat Registration
What you will need:

1.Original Certificate of Registration (Photocopies are not acceptable)

2.Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for each owner on the
registration or Federal Tax ID Number for companies

3.If the original registration is not available, the current registered owner must sign an Affidavit for
Replacement
(TC96-167) and have their signature notarized (See Example). There will be an
additional $6.00 fee for the replacement. (If notarized outside our office - $3.00)

4.Add $
2.00 for postage and handling per registration for mail in renewal
Boat registrations are renewed annually in April. Boat renewals may be processed in the county of
residence or in the county where docked.
Expired registrations cannot be renewed by mail.
Property Tax

Property tax for your vehicles, trailers and boats are assessed by the Property Valuation
Administrator on January 1st of each year. You are responsible for property tax for any boat
registered to you on January 1.
What you will need:

If you are moving out of state or assigning your Kentucky title to an out-of-state resident/business,
the following documents and information are required to cancel your Kentucky record:

1.A completed Affidavit for Correction/Exoneration

2.Current year property tax must be paid
